Celebrating Halloween…Recession Style

Financial Crisis

For many people, October is synonymous with just one thing: Halloween.  And with Halloween comes the pumpkins, the decorations, the costumes, and of course, the candy.  However, this year’s Halloween celebrations may look a bit different from most.  The National Retail Federation recently estimated that Halloween sales will drop by 18 percent (sales reached a four-year high in 2008).  Even people between the ages of 18 and 24–the age group that usually spends the most on Halloween merchandise–claim they’ll spend 21 percent less this year.

For the most part, people are getting creative this season as the ongoing recession interferes with their usual Halloween practices.  We want to know what you will be doing this month to make your Halloween as spooky as possible, even with a smaller budget.  Will you be making you own costumes?  Reusing old decorations?  Let us know!
